Malaga spring break 2025

22 March 2025

Not much narrative for this trip as it was mostly a holiday to go and get some sunshine. The first couple of days were actually cold and rainy, but given it was like that for 3 weeks prior our arrival we shouldn't really complaint... Given the recent protests against tourists we decided to base ourselves in the tourist ghetto of Torremolinos, at least the beach was long and we got our afternoon barefoot walk almost everyday.

It was cold

We mixed some hiking up in the hills around Mijas (and found out too late that in January there was a fire there so the path was full of burn trees (poor Paul snapped the only pair of trousers he had on the ass...), and cycling. We then found a tarmac road and followed it down to end up again in Mijas (our plan was to walk the ridge back home to Torremolinos). We were quite tired and got at the bus stop 5 min before the bus was due...our face when it didn't stop because it was packed full! We rushed to the bus stop where it leaves in Mijas and managed to get the other one (which was also packed full), good stuff or we would still be there!

Exiting bus journey to Mijas

We then rented 2 gravel bikes as they were selling Malaga as the next cycling destination but I have my doubts... We first went up by the river towards the airport, but got stuck in mud after 10k as the path was by the river which got flooded with the rain.

Then we cycled up the Montes the Malaga, which was a nice one but to get to the start of the climb you really need to put up with a lot of shit (cycling infrastructure within Malaga is a maze that only Sustrans can solve).

Then we had a nice one going up to the hills behind Torremolinos, but again, to get there we have to pass via Alahurin de la Torre on the road which was crazy busy...never again!

The last day with the bikes it was a coffee and back to Malaga, we just couldn't think of any other route that would be enjoyable!

The final walk was probably the more exiting and enjoyble, from and to our doorstep (no bus yeah!) and up to the Puertos de Torremolinos, it was sunny and windy, the path was decent with no surprises, and it was a brilliant way to finish our holiday (well, the amazing pizza at La Favorita was even a better way!)

Malaga as next cycling destination? I don't think so...they have a long way to go!
